Research
I obtained my PhD from the University of Waterloo in 2000, followed by a Natural Sciences and Engineering Council funded postdoctoral position in neuroscience, and my academic career commenced as a scientist at University of Toronto in 2001.
I began my research career by studying factors influencing retention, maintenance, transfer and assessments of clinical skills, as well as developing and testing the material (i.e. physical objects) and digital technologies that support learning.
As educational principles and technology are constantly evolving, so have my research interests. My most recent work has focussed on integrating disruptive (e.g. mixed realities three-dimensional printing and additive manufacturing), and more traditional, digital learning technologies to develop remote training solutions that can help prepare health professionals and first responders for real world challenges.

Leadership
I engaged in over two decades of leadership related to experiential learning programming. Starting at the Department of Surgery, Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, and the Hospital for Sick Children’s Learning and Research Institutes., in 2013, I became the inaugural director of the Clinical Learning and Simulation Centre at Memorial University. After six years, I joined Ontario Tech University as a Professor and Canada Research Chair in Healthcare Simulation in Ontario Tech University’s Faculty of Health Sciences. Here I founded maxSIMhealth Laboratory to build the capacity of the university and its partners to engage in simulation research and practice. One of the most significant accomplishments at Ontario Tech University is the ongoing development of a blueprint for the first-of-its-kind academic program (minor degree in health sciences) in Simulation Technology Educational Practices and Safety (STEPS).
For more information please follow the website for the program: STEPS-Program
Outside of university setting, I serve on a Board of Directors for Simulation Canada, Virtu WIL, and various organizing committees for societies that focus on enhancing skills training in healthcare education (e.g. Canadian Undergraduate Surgical Education Committee).
